AC Blowing Warm Air? Here's Why

Common reasons your AC is blowing warm air and what you can do before calling a technician.

Common reasons your AC is blowing warm air and what you can do before calling a technician.

Common Causes of Warm Air from Your AC

The most common reason your AC blows warm air is a refrigerant issue โ€” either a leak or low charge. Refrigerant is the chemical that absorbs heat from your indoor air. When levels drop, the system can't cool effectively and starts pushing warm air through your vents. Other common causes include a dirty or frozen evaporator coil, a failed compressor, a tripped circuit breaker to the outdoor unit, or a faulty thermostat.

Check These Before Calling a Technician

Start with the basics: make sure your thermostat is set to "cool" (not "heat" or "fan only") and the temperature is set below the current room temperature. Check your air filter โ€” a severely clogged filter restricts airflow enough to freeze the evaporator coil, which then blows warm air when it thaws. Go outside and check your condenser unit โ€” make sure it's running, clear of debris, and the circuit breaker hasn't tripped. If the outdoor unit isn't running but the indoor fan is, that's why you're getting warm air.

When to Call a Professional

If you've checked the basics and your AC is still blowing warm, you likely have a refrigerant leak, compressor failure, or electrical issue that requires a licensed technician. ARP Heat And Air can diagnose the problem quickly โ€” Charlie carries common parts on the truck and completes most repairs in a single visit. Don't wait in Oklahoma's summer heat.

Prevention Tips

Schedule annual AC maintenance before summer hits. A professional tune-up catches low refrigerant, worn capacitors, and dirty coils before they cause a breakdown on the hottest day of the year. Change your filter every 30-60 days during heavy use months. Keep your outdoor condenser clear of leaves, grass clippings, and debris with at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides.

Quick Diagnostic Checklist Before You Call

Before calling for service, work through these five checks in order. About 40% of "AC blowing warm" calls turn out to be one of these and can be fixed without a service visit.

1. Thermostat set to COOL, not HEAT or FAN. Sounds obvious. It's the single most common cause. Especially in spring when switching seasons.

2. Thermostat batteries. Dead batteries in a thermostat sometimes cause it to default to "fan" mode, which blows unconditioned air.

3. Air filter. A severely clogged filter can ice up the evaporator coil. Once iced, the system can't cool effectively. Solution: replace filter, turn system off for 4-6 hours, let ice melt, turn back on.

4. Outdoor unit running? Walk outside and listen. If the condenser isn't running, the indoor fan is just moving air โ€” no cooling. Common causes: tripped breaker, failed capacitor, or a safety switch tripped from low refrigerant.

5. Refrigerant lines. If the larger insulated copper line coming off the condenser feels warm or room-temp (should feel cold), refrigerant is likely low. This requires service โ€” don't try to add refrigerant yourself.

If all five check out and the AC still blows warm, call us. Typical repair cost: $150-$600. The diagnostic fee is $89 and waived with any completed repair.
