Real answers from Charlie, owner of ARP Heat And Air.
Some yes, some no. HEPA-grade filtration and high-MERV media filters genuinely remove particulates — proven by independent testing. UV-C lamps kill biological growth on coils and drain pans. Active air purifiers (iWave, REME HALO) have mixed evidence — we install when requested but don't oversell.
MERV 8 minimum for system protection. MERV 11-13 for allergy sufferers and pet owners. Higher MERV needs adequate fan capacity — your system may need a media cabinet to handle MERV 13 without restricting airflow. We measure static pressure to determine what your system can handle.
It helps the equipment, not directly the air. UV-C kills biological growth on the indoor coil and in the drain pan — important if you've had musty smells or mold issues. It does NOT meaningfully remove particles from the air; that's the filter's job.
Oklahoma summers: whole-home dehumidifiers ($1,800-$3,200 installed) keep humidity at 45-55% even when AC isn't running enough to dehumidify. Winters: whole-home humidifiers ($585-$1,200) raise humidity to 35-45%, reducing static shock, dry skin, and respiratory irritation.
Symptoms: persistent dust on furniture, allergies that ease when you leave home, musty smells when AC runs, condensation on cool surfaces, family members with breathing complaints. We can do an in-home air quality assessment to identify specific issues.
Modern tight homes (post-2010 construction) often yes — building codes have gotten stricter on air-tightness, and indoor pollutant levels can build up. ERVs (energy recovery ventilators) bring in filtered fresh air while recovering most of the heating/cooling energy. $1,500-$3,500 installed.
1-inch filters: every 1-3 months — closer to 1 month during high pollen (March-May) and high dust (windy fall days). 4-5 inch media filters: every 6-12 months. With pets, replace at the shorter end of those intervals.
Often yes — proper filtration removes pollen, dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander that drive most respiratory allergies. We see significant relief in maybe 70-80% of allergy sufferers who upgrade from MERV 8 to MERV 13 plus appropriate humidity control.
